We will be meeting at 10am at Java and Clay Café on Thursday October 13th.  From there one can sketch the pottery area in the back, the Skansie Park construction site across the street, street views of downtown Gig Harbor.  There are lots of windows to sketch from the inside but please don’t spend the entire time in one spot as those places are for their customers as is the patio outside.  Go to their website (above) to see what you can do in the pottery section.  Looks very interesting!

Let’s support venues that are sketcher-friendly by partaking of their good food while we sketch their unusual and unique interior.  So be generous, be considerate of the establishment and their customers and show the world how sketching can help everyone to be happy!

There is limited parking on the street.  I’m going to presume there is a restroom available, but again, it is for customers.  There is a restroom at Harbor Landing just down the street.  We will meet back at Java and Clay Cafe at 12:30 for sharing and photo.  For those staying for lunch, there is a Mexican restaurant next to Harbor Landing.
 

Directions:
Cross the Narrows Bridge
Exit to City Center/Wollochet
Turn right at the exit
Go down the hill (Pioneer) to the bottom
Turn left at the T
Java and Clay is about half way down the block on your left

 From Tacoma take the gig Harbor city center exit off highway 16 and turn right at the stop onto Pioneer.  Take the first right onto Kimball and follow it around to where it bends to the left.  Wilco is on the right.
From Bremerton take the Gig Harbor city center exit.  Turn left over the bridge and you are on Pioneer.  Take the first right right onto Kimball and follow it around to where it bends to the left.  Wilco is on the right.

We’ll be “Doing the Puyallup’ at the Puyallup Farmers Market.

The Market takes place both indoors and outdoors at the 2 acre Pioneer Park located in the center of downtown Puyallup on S. Meridian between W. Pioneer and 4th Ave. SW.

The Market and surrounding area features many types of sketching opportunities: displays of locally-grown produce, flowers & artisan foods, entertainment buskers, food trucks, play areas (Spray Park and Jungle Gym), a statue of Ezra Meeker (a Puyallup pioneer), a Veterans’ Memorial, sculptures from the Downtown Outdoor Art Gallery, City Hall, a variety of restaurants, the Pioneer Park Pavilion, The Puyallup Library, the Activity Center, and Anthem Coffee & Tea.

 
We will meet outside the Anthem Coffee & Tea at 10 am.

Parking Options:
These locations often fill up early….and residential parking becomes ever more distant with time.

After sharing our sketches and having a group photo, we'll gather for lunch at The Bistro, which is on site. 

In Galvin.

Three of us from Urban Sketchers Tacoma carpooled down to Galvin, WA to meet with other sketchers in Centralia.   I was quite early arriving at our meeting place in Puyallup, so I stopped to sketch this store.  I've been meaning to sketch it for a long time. Today there was both time and space to park across the street!

Another sketcher joined us there.  I've never heard of Galvin before but it's just a few miles outside of Centralia.



We met at "Busek's Auto Museum".  Actually, I think I would characterize it as a "collection" rather than a museum.  It's quite untidy but filled with lots of interesting vehicles and related items.  The amount of stuff to sketch might even challenge Steve Reddy, who I thought of as I looked through the 3 buildings full of artifacts. 



When the vegetation takes over a body of water, it's called eutrophication.  What is it called when vegetation takes over an old truck?

Parking Day

We participated in Parking Day in Tacoma.  "What's Parking Day" was one of the frequent questions.  "PARK(ing) Day is an annual worldwide event where artists, designers and citizens transform metered parking spots into temporary public parks".  Frances did the work to get us a spot and brought all the stuff for our park... fake grass, tables, chairs, sun umbrellas, etc. We even had art supplies to give away... left over from the West Coast Sketch Crawl. 





We were there in our red shirts.  Marjorie came all the way from Kingston after learning about us from our blog but she had to leave early.  I had a really good time talking to all our park visitors about Urban Sketching.  There were several people who seemed quite interested in joining us in the future. 
I started a sketch of the view down the street but then a huge, white, SUV pulled into the parking space right next to us.  Well, that's what happens to Urban Sketchers!  I didn't finish that sketch as it stayed over 2 hours but I did sketch what I could see over its roof! 



I only got one sketch done as there was a lot of interacting with our visitors.

Trixie Hobbitses

Or very clever gardeners and landscape designers.  I learned about the small Hobbit House in June from a piece on a local TV show and I immediately put it on my list of sketch locations.  Today was my first chance to get out there as it is a 1.5 hour drive.

It is located at The Brothers Greenhouse in Port Orchard.  It was built by Cheryl Pelkey and Marilyn Davis who work there.  On the video at the TV link, above, they said, "we're both the hobbits; we fit under the roof".  I guess I am too, as I fit with inches to spare!  



After exploring the greenhouses, I went out to the hobbit house which is just behind the greenhouses.  It is wonderful.  There isn't much inside but you can go in.  Once I had my fill of photos, I sat down to sketch.

Foss Waterway outing

We met today at the Foss Waterway Seaport.  Since I'd been there sketching with the group before, I chose to sketch outside.  It was lovely weather I didn't want another day indoors.  This is perhaps the first time I've devoted the entire sketch outing to one sketch.  It is also larger than I normally do as it is in a 9"x12" sketchbook (22.9 x 30.5 cm)



The old Tacoma Courthouse is the tan brick building and the lighter colored one with dome is the Pacific Building.  It was a rail station at one time.

We did the usual sharing of sketches and group photo.  I think there were more sketchers than in the photo as at one point I counted 24 people.

Then we went to lunch at the nearby Rock the Dock. Well, it was rockin' alright.  It took an hour to get our food.  And then we stood in a line for at least 20 min just to pay.  It wasn't the servers fault.... there were just two of them for the entire place, including a jam backed patio!  Management for the fail!  But we made use of the time waiting for our meals by sketching each other!
