Today we met at Southcenter Mall to sketch their impressive dragon.<br /><br />Almost everyone did sketch the dragon. Some of us did another scene as well. <br /><br />Since I'd already done two views of the massive 25 foot tall sculpture a couple weeks ago, I chose a different view...from above. I also drew it on a larger sheet of paper.</p><p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53544268451_0a44427400_z.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="486" height="640" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53544268451_0a44427400_z.jpg" width="486" /></a></div><p></p><p>There was still some time left in our session, so I sat in the hallway to sketch a view of the lanterns hanging from the ceiling. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53544449373_5aa2bf10ce_z.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="442" height="640" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53544449373_5aa2bf10ce_z.jpg" width="442" /></a></div><br /><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://photos.smugmug.com/SketchOutings/2024-0221-Dragon/i-9jChJ24/0/FB6vK9xNgBQjJM8MS7Wgmh5Pzqx6sRKZRjHL6K5qN/M/12-M.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="411" data-original-width="600" height="411" src="https://photos.smugmug.com/SketchOutings/2024-0221-Dragon/i-9jChJ24/0/FB6vK9xNgBQjJM8MS7Wgmh5Pzqx6sRKZRjHL6K5qN/M/12-M.jpg" width="600" /></a></div><br />MK Buikehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18290622145250386053noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3275581522620492384.post-39171703335322409562024-02-08T17:02:00.000-08:002024-02-08T17:02:00.072-08:00Sketching at 7Seas<p>It was a brisk morning to sketch at the Gig Harbor 7Seas Taproom. They like having us and we like going. There is so much to sketch both in the huge indoor area and outdoors. <br /><br />My first sketch was a display with bunny characters inside. I thought I might do a montage with other bunnies. However, I went outside in the back and found these fish. Did you know you can have a school of fish in your garden even if you don't have a pond? </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53506172812_c7fee1526b_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="493" data-original-width="640" height="427" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53506172812_c7fee1526b_z.jpg" width="554" /></a></div><p></p><p>Three sketchers had already left by the time we had our throw down and photo. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://photos.smugmug.com/SketchOutings/2024-0203-Watsons-Nursery/i-Tx9wt7j/0/6c684b85/M/022-M.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="432" data-original-width="599" height="432" src="https://photos.smugmug.com/SketchOutings/2024-0203-Watsons-Nursery/i-Tx9wt7j/0/6c684b85/M/022-M.jpg" width="599" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://photos.smugmug.com/SketchOutings/2024-0203-Watsons-Nursery/i-VQjZk8z/0/34a84089/M/012-M.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="432" data-original-width="599" height="432" src="https://photos.smugmug.com/SketchOutings/2024-0203-Watsons-Nursery/i-VQjZk8z/0/34a84089/M/012-M.jpg" width="599" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>MK Buikehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18290622145250386053noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3275581522620492384.post-58742904151864583612024-01-31T17:10:00.000-08:002024-01-31T17:10:37.634-08:00Dragon!<p>There is a massive dragon installed at Southcenter Mall in Tukwila for Lunar New Year. I discovered it when I returned to the Apple store to pick up the replacement for the dead Pencil. I was very impressed. It is over 2 stories tall. <br /><br />I organized a small, ad hoc, sketch outing today, mostly to see how mall staff reacted. In past years us Urban Sketchers have been asked to leave a different mall. So much different today. I spoke with a member of staff who seemed delighted we were there and said it would be fine if a larger group came. So I'm planning it! Look for an update soon. I want to run the date by her before I announce. <br /><br />The Moon gate frames the walkway to the dragon.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://photos.smugmug.com/SketchOutings/2024-0131-Dragon/i-mHWW7sP/0/feb43900/O/PXL_20240129_2203568902.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="565" data-original-width="416" height="508" src="https://photos.smugmug.com/SketchOutings/2024-0131-Dragon/i-mHWW7sP/0/feb43900/O/PXL_20240129_2203568902.jpg" width="374" /></a></div><br />I chose that scene as my first sketch today. I think if I do it again, I'll use a larger paper. This was just under A5 size. <p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53501754690_3a9e190921_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="446" data-original-width="640" height="446" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53501754690_3a9e190921_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p></p><p>Then I got closer to sketch another view of the magnificent dragon. <br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53501754685_c682d97a5a_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="445" height="640" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53501754685_c682d97a5a_z.jpg" width="445" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://photos.smugmug.com/SketchOutings/2024-0131-Dragon/i-7BXmRbL/0/831e1838/O/PXL_20240131_2128573832.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="481" data-original-width="640" height="437" src="https://photos.smugmug.com/SketchOutings/2024-0131-Dragon/i-7BXmRbL/0/831e1838/O/PXL_20240131_2128573832.jpg" width="581" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://photos.smugmug.com/SketchOutings/2024-0131-Dragon/i-RNnRCGj/0/1fb5249e/O/PXL_20240131_2130241472.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="481" data-original-width="640" height="481" src="https://photos.smugmug.com/SketchOutings/2024-0131-Dragon/i-RNnRCGj/0/1fb5249e/O/PXL_20240131_2130241472.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>MK Buikehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18290622145250386053noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3275581522620492384.post-34820234143606958972024-01-24T11:12:00.000-08:002024-01-24T11:12:43.987-08:00February 2024 outings<p> <span style="font-size: large;">First Saturday, February 3: <a href="https://shop.watsonsgreenhouse.com/">Watson's Nursery</a></span></p><div><span style="font-size: large;"></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"></span><span style="font-size: small;">6211 Pioneer Way East, Puyallup, WA 98371</span></div><div><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: small;">This

This is not a sketch outing, per se. We'll gather in a library meeting room to share tips, tricks and art supplies.<br /><br />Only if you'd like to do so, please share for about 5 minutes about a tip, trick or bit of kit that has been useful to you as an Urban Sketcher.<br /><br />Also bring any art supplies, books, etc you'd like to trade or give to fellow sketchers. Is there something you have that you don't like or just aren't using? Perhaps someone else will like it more than you. <br /><br />Gather at 10 am near entrance to library, which opens at 10. We'll find our room and get settled. We have it to 1pm but will need to spend the last few minutes cleaning up. <br /><br /><i><b><span style="color: red;">The room reservation page says "masks required" so come prepared</span></b></i>. However, the link to the library's COVID protocol page is dead, so I don't know whether this is still true. So many options to sketch! There were even live reindeer, which were rather frisky. <br /><br />I sketched some displays, snow critters and gnomes.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53410980196_048bd6c1ce_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="444" height="640" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53410980196_048bd6c1ce_z.jpg" width="444" /></a></div><br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53410980201_17f920b285_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="446" height="640" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53410980201_17f920b285_z.jpg" width="446" /></a></div><p></p><p>Then a quick, direct to watercolor, sketch of a reindeer. There was so many holiday decorations it was hard to choose a subject. </p><p> With my first sketch, I found the juxtaposition of the holiday tree and the meat market ("More Meat") amusing. The Fardell Farms has a great selection and display of pumpkins, produce and gourds. We were both drawn to this subject. The weather was more like summer, though, as it was rather too warm in the sun! <br /><br />I'd added a convenience orange to my palette last week but I don't like it. I may look for another or just mix, which is probably better anyway. <br /><br />I was there early so sat in the shade on a bench at our meeting location and sketched the pumpkin display. <br /><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53242176409_6c113e623e_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="468" height="640" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53242176409_6c113e623e_z.jpg" width="468" /></a></div><p> </p><p>Since the mountain was out, I felt the need to include it. The "field" of pumpkins had hay bale spider sculptures throughout.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53242297685_801c403c81_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="458" data-original-width="640" height="458" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53242297685_801c403c81_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p>We found a shady spot to share our sketches.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://photos.smugmug.com/SketchOutings/2023-1007-Spooner-Farm/i-FNznmVm/0/f0244e4a/M/02-M.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="600" height="450" src="https://photos.smugmug.com/SketchOutings/2023-1007-Spooner-Farm/i-FNznmVm/0/f0244e4a/M/02-M.jpg" width="600" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://photos.smugmug.com/SketchOutings/2023-1007-Spooner-Farm/i-gKgthSJ/0/78d1e86c/M/01-M.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="600" height="450" src="https://photos.smugmug.com/SketchOutings/2023-1007-Spooner-Farm/i-gKgthSJ/0/78d1e86c/M/01-M.jpg" width="600" /></a></div><p></p><p>Sandee had left before the throw down. <br /></p><p><br /></p>MK Buikehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18290622145250386053noreply@blogger.com0
