Point Defiance in the fog

We met at the Pt Defiance Marina on a very foggy morning. It was unfortunate that the view was obscured.

Is there anything out there?

The numbers of sketchers shifted throughout the morning. At one point there were 9 sketchers. But at the throw down, there were only 4 of us left.

Even before the fog, I'd decided I was going to decamp over to the Japanese garden. I'd missed that sketch outing last month and wanted another chance at it. I'd sketched the shrine some years ago but am no longer happy with that sketch. Today the tree behind the shrine was a red as the Tori Gate!

"Inspired by Japanese architecture when it was built in 1914, the Pagoda and its surrounding gardens are a signature of Point Defiance Park. Serene pools, a waterfall, a picturesque footbridge, cherry trees, azaleas and rhododendrons surround the Pagoda on its perch above Puget Sound." (from the website)

"Surrounded by a Japanese garden featuring pools, a waterfall, a footbridge, sakura cherry trees, and an authentic Shinto shrine and Tori Gate presented by Tacoma’s Sister City in Kitakyushu Japan, the Pagoda serves as a venue for garden shows, classes and community celebrations."  (from the website)

Ready for viewing

Ready for Viewing

The Urban Sketchers Tacoma show at the Foss Waterway Seaport Museum is set up and ready for our close up!  The title is "Sketching Tacoma and Beyond".  This poster was made by Mark Ryan.

Monday was drop-off day.  KaCe and crew (Bob and Lori) were organized... right down to a sign on the door so we'd be sure to go in the correct one.

On Tuesday another crew hung the show.  Mark directed Bob, Lori and myself. Kace stopped by to deliver the labels. We had it mostly finished in about 2 hours.  After a lunch break we put the final touches on it.  I learned a lot of good tips on how to hang a show!

The opening reception is Thursday, October 18 from 5-8pm during Tacoma Art Walk. Foss Waterway Seaport Musuem, 705 Dock St, Tacoma, WA 98402.

USk Tacoma sketchers are invited to come sketch and interact with the public during the reception.

Nice day on campus

We were fortunate to have a beautiful, sunny day for sketching, though itwas a bit chilly at first. We met on the patio of the Wheellock Center, the student union.  From there were spread out across the campus of the University of Puget Sound and then returned for our sketch book throw down.

Thanks to KaCe for taking the photo.

My first stop was the library to see an excellent exhibit of drawings by local artist Mark Hoppmann. They were mostly in ink. I enjoyed this exhibit very, very much. The drawings were wonderful. That he displayed his sketchbooks was an added delight. The staging of the exhibit was delightful, with so many small artifacts added to the cases. I found the method for displaying sketchbooks quite clever. It allowed the viewer to see more than one page. Now I really wish I'd gone to the "sketch-in with the artist" last Wednesday!

I wandered around looking for the observatory dome and couldn't find it. So I sat on the grass to sketch this scene at the corner of the library.

Then I turned to my left and there was the observatory! But I moved for a better composition.

I'm leaving this as an ink drawing for my Day 6 Inktober.

More photos.
