We enjoyed a garden tour and sketch outing at Ed Hume Seeds garden this am. While grandson, Alex, was our main tour guide, Ed himself joined us for much of it. Thank you so much for a wonderful experience! We were last there in 2016.
"Hoppy" the Happy Giant Aphid - created by (artist of nearby residence) Chuck Fitzgerald in 1997
It was originally displayed in the pioneer park in downtown Puyallup across from the statue of Ezra Meeker. He was an early settler. Among other things, he was responsible for bringing hops to the area. They flourished and became famous world wide. However, the arrival of the hop aphid infestation in 1881 devastated the crop. This sculpture ws originally "The Apologetic Aphid".
Alex, Ed, and the stray cat who stayed.
Alex portrays the traditional placement of a large rock in a Japanese garden. It is meant to obstruct the entrance to keep out evil spirits. However, in order to make the garden accessible, a concession was made for a more convenient placement.Alex demonstrates the the seed packet filling machine, first patented in 1885! The silly hat dates from when he started giving tours at 9 years old.
That's us, with Ed Hume in front. Not bad for 93 years young!
We were each given two seed packets.
