In the drizzle

Just three intrepid sketchers braved the light sprinkles today for Urban Sketchers Tacoma outing at Fireman's Park.  Two or three others decamped to a coffee shop in town, where they sketched the views out the windows.

I showed Heather the @pwscully method for sketching under an umbrella. The rain was light enough for that to work fine for us. Lori's set up already had an umbrella!

My first sketch was the view from the park, including a relatively new sculpture which commemorates the Port of Tacoma's centennial in 2018.  "The artwork, titled Swell, is constructed of eight powder-coated steel panels shaped like the bow of a ship, with art and poetry embedded throughout telling the story of the energy and opportunity that trade, transportation, and the Port create for the region. Rising 10 feet high on a 12-foot by 7-foot base, Swell is meant to be an interactive space, inviting visitors to walk through and take in the many beautiful perspectives and views it offers of the neighboring landscape, both inside and outside the sculpture."

It was created by Tacoma-based firm Rotator Creative and installed in late 2020.

I had hoped to see the mountain out behind that large railroad bridge but, once again, no luck. I don't think I've ever been to this park when Mt. Rainier was out.

My second sketch was of "Clearing the Way" by Larry Anderson. It celebrates the centennial of Tacoma in 1984.
"'The sculpture symbolizes the lumber industry and the solitary figure in the woods who has cleared the way for his town', in honor of the timber industry which has provided for the development of Tacoma throughout its history."

You might notice we have a new USk Tacoma stamp!  It's not quite correct as the USk logo on the left is not as it should be.  The company is remaking the die for me to replace.
