In Steilacoom

We met in the pleasant village of Steilacoom on a cloudy, cool morning. Incorporated in 1854, Steilacoom is Washington State's oldest city

Despite having sketched there at least a couple times before I found subjects I hadn't noticed before. First is the monument to the first church north of the Columbia. The text reads: 1853-1908 This monument commemorates the erection on this site of the first Protestant church building north of the Columbia River in 1853 by Rev. John F. DeVore D.D. and his co-workers and friends.
Erected by the Washington Sate Historical Society Puget Sound M.E. Conference and Pioneer friends in 1908.

A plaque on a pillar seems to indicate it was a Methodist church. I added that as a bit of collage from my photo.

I stood on the intermediary level of three for Charlie's Park. The view was out over the bay to nearby islands and beyond.

My final sketch was a light post with an honorary sign: Medal of Honor Way honoring SFC Leroy Petry The Wiki about him is worth a read. Despite the amputation, he re-enlisted. As of Dec. 2015 he lives in Steilacoom.

We had visitors from another Urban Sketchers chapter plus a new member.
