Chilly Lakewold

A small group of sketchers braved the cloudy, chilly weather to sketch at Lakewold Gardens yesterday. The wisteria was in full bloom so that's where I started.

I had to wait for two weddings to happen before I could sketch in the gazebo! I was drawn to the flower blossoms in the water.

Our 10th!

This month is the 10th Anniversary of the first sketch outing held by Urban Sketchers Tacoma.  We had  the celebration today, complete with cake.  

It was a beautiful Solstice morning at Lakewold Garden.  There is so much to sketch there.  I wanted to go back to what I think is a bee habitat, which is also surrounded by foxglove (digitalis on the leaf). There was a pleasant breeze and many bird songs.

 Many sketchers came.  Some of the originals and one brand new one (welcome Nellie)!  A couple had left by the time we took the photo.

Frances told the story of how we hatched the group while sketching on a trash can at Pike Market in Seattle. The large bin made a convenient table that fit both our sketchbooks. She had been at the very first Urban Sketchers Seattle outing.  But lamented the distance from her home in Puyallup and thought it would be good to start a group in Pierce County, centered around Tacoma.  I said I'd help, especially with the tech part of it.

Lakewold Gardens

 It's been several years since we last sketched in this garden.  The streets around have changed but the garden is much as I remember it.  Still, there were so many possible subjects!

I started with this small statue.  There was no information about it.

 I wanted to do a small montage.  This is the knot garden but there is no info on this object, which seems to have been a well.  Liz knew what the flower is but now I've forgotten.

Return to Lakewold Gardens

When our group visited Lakewold Gardens in Lakewood for a sketch out, I found that there just hadn't been enough time for drawing as much as I would have liked......so, I decided to go back. This stone cherub caught my attention with all the plants surrounding it. Time to get into the zen-zone!

Lakewold Gardens

Yesterday, Wednesday, was the Urban Sketchers Tacoma outing to Lakewold Gardens.  I've been at least once before but don't remember being quite so distracted by all the sketching opportunities.  I did a lot of walking around before choosing subjects. 

And I certainly wasn't aware of the Fairyfest!  There were dozens of small, individually created, fair houses spread throughout the garden.  

I decided to make a two page montage.  I included 2 of the fairy houses, a moss covered chair with shrine in the Garden for Peace, and a small fishing monk statue.



We met back near the Garden Shop and entry point for sketch sharing and the group photo.





Afterward, a smaller group of us went to lunch.  I took my minimal sketch kit in with me and did this sketch of the Red Robin in my tiny sketchbook.
