Union Station

We met at Union Station. It's now the federal court house but in the past it was a main train station. It has beautifully restored Victorian era decor and glass art by Dave Chihuly.

I sketched the same scene twice. This first one I would have liked better if the ink hadn't smeared. That pen is supposed to be waterproof!

I drew a light drawing in pencil and then used watercolor for more detailed drawing and shading. This is not my usual method but I'd like to use it more.

We were a small group. Brad left early, before out throw down. I forgot to take a group photo.

The Station and the Library

As we arrived early, we sought a warm beverage at Anthem Coffee. I decided to try out the new Field Notes Signature sketchbook. This is an ink drawing with Lamy Joy (Platinum Carbon black) and a Pentalic brush pen. It ghosted a little on the back of the paper but didn't bleed through. The ghosting didn't show up in the scan so I haven't posted an image.



It was a cold and blustery morning as Urban Sketchers Tacoma gathered in the shelter of the rotunda of Union Station, which is now a Federal Court House. We spread out all over the building. There were views out the windows and Chuhuly glass sculptures.

My first sketch was from the main floor, looking up to the walkway with an old clock and the large window with Chuhuly's installation, Monarch Window.

 

Next, I went down to what would have been "track level" when it was a train station. There I sketched a view of the Bridge of Glass that leads over to the Museum of Glass.



After lunch together, many of us went to the Tacoma Main Library to see the USk Tacoma show there. Beverly did a wonderful job installing it.

Regional Sketch Gathering - Tacoma

These are two sketches from the July 11th Sketch Gathering in and around Union Station. We were given a reprieve from the hot weather and actually found myself scrambling to cover a sketch from the rain. Almost forgot what that was like.

The second sketch was an attempt to paint the reflection off glass on the Tacoma Art Museum.

Past Tacoma sketches

Going through older sketchbooks and found some Tacoma sketches. I did these sketches while my daughter was at youth symphony rehearsal on Saturday mornings.

Our first regular Wednesday outing

The first regular 3rd Wednesday sketch outing for the Tacoma Urban Sketchers was in Union Station, Tacoma.   It is a beautiful interior, full of graceful architecture and many Dale Chihuly glass pieces.  We had an excellent turn out, as well.  There were 18 sketchers, though some had to leave before the final group photo.

I chose a view from the second floor, looking through an arch to the Chihuly hanging glass over the lobby.



I had a few minutes before our sharing session at 12:30 so I quickly sketched this view through the Chihuly Monarch window.  It only took about 10 minutes.
