International Urban Sketchers week 2024

 Urban Sketchers has declared 1-7 May as International Urban Sketchers week.  We do have an outing planned during this week.  On May 4th we'll meet in Central Tacoma to sketch and show off the varied environment and history of downtown Tacoma.

USk Edmonton (Alberta, Canada) has suggested some daily sketch themes to use for rest of the week. If you post online, please use the hashtags #USKWeek2024  #usktacoma.

May 1: Art Shop Sketching
May 2: cafes and restaurants
May 3: Theater and music venues
May 4: Heritage buildings (we'll be meeting in Tacoma)
May 5: Green spaces
May 6: Places of Worship
May 7: buildings with murals or other interesting features   

But please feel free to draw what inspires you during this week and continue to use the hashtags.

 Meet at 10 am outside the Washington State History Museum

There are many options to sketch from that location with historic buildings, bridge to Museum of Glass, etc.  Meet back at 12:30 to share sketches.

Third Wednesday, May 15:  Soos Creek Garden

The entrance is easy to miss...watch closely for the sign.  

Meet at 10 am in the parking lot.  We will finish at noon to share sketches.

There are several habitats and structures to sketch, including a pond and a garden.

Crows are among the smartest of all birds.  They can recognize human faces, pass knowledge along to new generations, work together to protect each other, set up sentries to watch for danger, even use tools. Meet at 10:00 near the front entrance.  This venue offers plenty of sketching opportunities such as landscape materials, garden plants, sculptures, gift shop and a lovely Japanese Garden.

 It was a lovely morning to sketch outdoors at the Gig Harbor 7Seas.  The views, conversation and sketching opportunities were grand.

Saturday at UPS

Not the UPS you might be more familiar with....We met at the University of Puget Sound.  There is a beautiful campus.

Most of us enjoyed the shelter provided by the Wheelock Student Center. It was chilly, windy, and had started to drizzle.  Fortunately, there were large windows with good views.

I chose the food court tables to sketch a bit of reportage...the banner hanging from the balcony.

 First Saturday, April 6:  University of Puget Sound

 Wheelock Student Center, entry off N. Alder St. between 14th and 15th.

We’ll meet at 10:00 AM outside the entrance of Student Union ("Wheelock Student Center") which faces into campus.  The building is located on the East side of campus.

It is building 54 on the map.  Parking Lot P1 off Alder Street allows Visitor parking.

Meet at 11:00 am, Thursday April 11 near the front entrance.  Since 7 Seas does not open until 11:00, we will meet an hour later than usual.  This venue offers plenty of parking, views of the harbor, Millville Pizza truck and beverages.  Sketchers will have several choices of subject matter, indoors and out.  Last February, we sketched here indoors due to chilly weather.  We are hopeful to be able to enjoy the outdoor decks this April.  The staff and patrons were welcoming to Urban Sketchers.  Please be respectful of customers.
