Not that one. University of Puget Sound

The weather was much more pleasant today with a nice breeze on the campus of University of Puget Sound in Tacoma. I didn't get any further than the plaza area near the Wheelock Student Center.

Right in front is a giant sequoia that is truly a giant. There is lots more tree above where my sketch ends. I did want to include the colorful chairs and sketcher, Liz.

I moved only a few steps away to sketch the Hilton Bowen Gardner Memorial Fountain. For some reason, it's known as the "Jones Fountain". I included the crow I saw enjoying a good splash in the fountain.

Saturday at UPS

Not the UPS you might be more familiar with....We met at the University of Puget Sound.  There is a beautiful campus.

Most of us enjoyed the shelter provided by the Wheelock Student Center. It was chilly, windy, and had started to drizzle.  Fortunately, there were large windows with good views.

I chose the food court tables to sketch a bit of reportage...the banner hanging from the balcony.

First Day of Spring!

It could not have been a more perfect day for sketching on the First Day of Spring. We gathered near the Union building on the campus of the University of Puget Sound and we all sketched outside. It was a cloudless, warm day. Did we set another record?  The past two days have been the warmest ever recorded for the date.

 
At least 3 people left early.

I've sketched here before so I wanted to find something different. This is my second sketch, done on 10x10 Bockingford watercolor paper. It is Oppenheimer Hall and I was most interested in the sundial at the top of the building.

Nice day on campus

We were fortunate to have a beautiful, sunny day for sketching, though itwas a bit chilly at first. We met on the patio of the Wheellock Center, the student union.  From there were spread out across the campus of the University of Puget Sound and then returned for our sketch book throw down.

My first stop was the library to see an excellent exhibit of drawings by local artist Mark Hoppmann. They were mostly in ink. I enjoyed this exhibit very, very much. The drawings were wonderful. That he displayed his sketchbooks was an added delight. The staging of the exhibit was delightful, with so many small artifacts added to the cases. I found the method for displaying sketchbooks quite clever. It allowed the viewer to see more than one page. Now I really wish I'd gone to the "sketch-in with the artist" last Wednesday!



I wandered around looking for the observatory dome and couldn't find it. So I sat on the grass to sketch this scene at the corner of the library.



Then I turned to my left and there was the observatory! But I moved for a better composition.





I'm leaving this as an ink drawing for my Day 6 Inktober.

A pleasant campus

For our First Saturday (Sept 2) outing, we gathered at University of Puget Sound. It is a beautiful, "red brick" campus with manicured lawns and tall trees. I found the architecture very appealing.





 It is a 4 year liberal arts college affiliated with the United Methodist Church. It was  founded in 1888. They are the "Loggers".

As usual, we (Feather & Carolyn carpooled with me) arrived early and had some time to explore the campus. I decided during this walk through that this spire and the fountain would be my sketch subjects.

We had planned for lunch in a cafe off campus but, when called, they thought they might be too full to accommodate a group. Fortunately, during our walk around, we found the university cafeteria. It was a good place for lunch with many choices and lots of room for our group to sit together.

After lunch, a few of us went into the library to see the exhibit "Mare Made", featuring a retrospective of the art books by local artist Mare Blocker.  We also encountered a small exhibit of a group of Chandler O'Leary's prints.

Only as we were leaving did I see the observatory. I hope we'll sketch there again next year and will remember that I want to sketch this next.
